Why is the Planet Mark important to Chapters Financial?

12 November 2019

Caring about the environment is nothing new. Many of us do it as individuals as part of our daily routine, building in small changes that collectively should reduce our impact on the dwindling resources our globe uses. And is it any different as a small business / SME? Highly topical as I am sure you can appreciate.

We thought about business processes and how we could reduce our impact as a business around a decade ago. Having undertaken some research, we engaged in 2011 with Planet First and the Planet Mark certification programme. This was because we wanted to make a difference, or at least play our part in keeping our 'footprint' to a minimum as we grew the business in Guildford and Surrey.

We believe we can all play our part in reducing our carbon emissions, as a business and as individuals. But thinking about the footprint we leave goes further than this to other areas of our business processes, such as using local suppliers, weekly recycling, printing on sustainable paper to name just a couple of obvious (to us anyway) examples. Small changes we appreciate, but over the years they add up.

Some readers will know that the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) talks about a culture within a business, aiming for positive client outcomes, rather than negative. Ethics if you will. This really encompasses what you want to achieve, both for your clients and as a business. We believe that behaviours towards the environment should also follow this theme and this is why we aim to make the smallest impact on the environment that we can reasonably achieve. We know that we are not perfect at all, but at least it is a culture that we aim to achieve and one we would recommend to others.

If you want to know more about Planet First and how you can be involved and how they can help, take a look at their website here: https://theplanetmark.com/why-we-need-to-exist/ . Their processes do not stand still, asking businesses to make improvements where possible after assessment each year.

We have enjoyed the continuing process and feature their link on our website. Try it soon to make your difference.
